Indian Golfing is going places! The latest case proving this fact is Arjun Atwal, as he just became the first Indian ever to have won a US title in Golf. He still managed to achieve the best result for an Indian on the USA PGA Tour at the USD 5 million Bellsouth Classic title in Duluth, Georgia. The tournament was shortened to 54 holes because of bad weather, but it failed to stop Arjun as he carded the tournament’s best round of eight-under 64 in the third round.
That performance took Atwal to the five-man play-off where the defending Master’s champion stole the show with a fine performance to win the tournament. Arjun lost a chance to create history as his hit on the 18th hole shot into the water at the Sugarloaf golf course. This resulted in a one-over score for that hole for Atwal.
Atwal was still delighted with his performance as he spoke to the media: “My game has been showing progress and I am glad that I am coming close.” He is currently playing on a conditional card, which allows him to make 18 starts on the tour. In addition to this fine performance at the Bellsouth Classic, he has had moderate results of 16th at AT&T Pebble Beach and 26th at Chrysler Classic of Tucson.
He also made another record of picking up the biggest ever check for a tournament for an Indian golfer as he pocketed USD 330,000 for his performance.
