Shepparton golfing sensation Jarrod Lyle has come within a shot of winning the $US275 000 Macau Open.

Lyle, 23, yesterday shot a closing round 67 to tie with fellow Aussie Marcus Both in second place at 13-under par.

The pair finished one shot behind tournament winner, Chinese Taipei veteran Wang Ter-chang.

The Macau Open was played at the Macau Golf and Country Club (par 71).

The result was Lyle’s highest-placed finish since turning professional at the end of last year.

Lyle started the closing round at nine-under par and moved to equal leader after carding a birdie at the par-five second.

He continued to play solid golf throughout the opening nine holes, making two more birdies on the par-four seventh and ninth.

Then disaster struck.

With the tension mounting, Lyle made his one and only mistake for the day when he double-bogeyed the par-five 12th.

The courageous righthander immediately hit back, birdieing the 13th, but the damage was done.

He went on to birdie two of the final three holes to close out with a defiant 67, but it wasn’t enough to bridge the gap on overnight leader Wang.

Lyle, who shot to prominence three months ago when he out-classed some of the world’s best golfers to finish third at the $2 million Heineken Classic, will line up in the Philippine Open later this week.

The Philippine Open, to be staged at Lipa City, Batangas, runs from May 19-22.
