Tiger Woods usually knows the rules so well that he can use them to his advantage, but on Sunday on the 10th hole he violated a rule that applies to a temporary immovable structure.
It was a fence, which was anchored to the ground and bolted together. Rules officials had been granting players a free drop from the area all week, but Woods hit a ball near the fence, and according to PGA Tour tournament director Mark Russell, Woods began pushing the fence to see if it would move, and the fans followed, eventually damaging the fence.
Woods didn’t learn of the violation until he turned in his scorecard. He was given a two-stroke penalty, finished at 2 under par for the tournament and tied for 11th. Woods would not stop to discuss the penalty, but Russell said, “He wasn’t very happy.
